Chesterfield and other disambig pages

Hi. Please note that if you describe places (cities, counties, etc.) – like you just did in this disambig page – you have to separate further administritive divisions by a comma and precede geographical/administritive names by a preposition (Polish: w or rarely we, e.g. we Wrocławiu / we Włoszech). Example:

  • You did: miejscowość w hrabstwie Staffordshire Anglii
  • it should be: miejscowość w hrabstwie Staffordshire, w Anglii

For further questions please write to me on my talk page. Regards. --Pit rock (dyskusja) 15:55, 10 mar 2017 (CET)[odpowiedz]

Thanks Pit rock, I corrected the Derbyshire one just then otherwise it looks like "Staffordshire Anglii" is the name of the county, using "miejscowość w hrabstwie Surrey (Anglia)" is used on Westcott for example and using "miejscowość w Anglii, w hrabstwie Nottinghamshire" like on Cotham is OK? I think that was just a small error that I made just once. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 15:57, 10 mar 2017 (CET)[odpowiedz]
miejscowość w hrabstwie Surrey (Anglia) is absolutely OK. If we use brackets for further geo./adm. names we don't have to use w/we preposition. Contnets of Westcott & Cotham is well written. --Pit rock (dyskusja) 16:15, 10 mar 2017 (CET)[odpowiedz]
Westcott was written by Kotbot, the way of Cotham was I think by Delta 51. I generally use Cotham stile where possible but because there are many pages written by Kotbot I use that stile to be consistant. BTW in terms of not notable pages I listed Whiteside (Northumberland) at Wikipedia:Poczekalnia/artykuły/2017:03:03:Whiteside (Northumberland). I would also note that we nearly always use brackets not commas here for consistency otherwise Barnsley (Shropshire) should be at Barnsley, Shropshire. WP:SU states not to use commas which is consistent with all articles here. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 16:23, 10 mar 2017 (CET)[odpowiedz]

The deletion discussion is finished. Please edit the article as it should be (we can keep the history of the article here), convert it into the redirect or the disambig. Let me know if there is something what has to be deleted or moved. Stanko (dyskusja) 19:08, 16 mar 2017 (CET)[odpowiedz]

Errors in location

PMG and Pit rock, I have just realized I have had a HUGE error in directions to larger places for example [2] I had missed out on the fact that compass directions were given (when I thought it was just distance to). Would it be possible to change everything with a bot (like [3]) to the equivalent to "It lies 24.5 km from Oxford"? I just noticed this with Oxfordshire but it is in every county. I'm really sorry for introducing errors into Wikipedia. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 12:37, 22 lip 2017 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Hey, note that there is another county with that name in North Carolina, and a few historic ones in Australia and Canada. The distinction between "County Durham" and "Durham County" is lost in Polish, and both would be referred to as "(hrabstwo) Durham". In fact, one might argue that the article about the US county should be renamed to Durham (hrabstwo w Karolinie Północnej), as the current name doesn't adhere to the general naming conventions (and likewise for all other US counties). For that reason, I'd reconsider the page move. Kind regards, Delta 51 (dyskusja) 11:57, 26 sie 2017 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Delta 51 unfortunately even our article on Hrabstwo Durham (Karolina Północna) doesn't indicate it is called simply "Durham" (while the English one does) nor does the English Wikipedia, however I have reverted the move, thanks. Pit rock I haven't created many articles in the last few years but are we going to create all the settlements in Scotland/Wales with over 500 people? Such articles mostly exist at En, Es and Sv and maybe a bot could create them? Wikipedysta:Damianek1986 who has been here since at least January 2009 with various IPs and accounts, was probably going to do this is now blocked. @Pit rock ^. PMG (dyskusja) 13:24, 4 maj 2021 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Hi Buckden. Well, in this case I really would be happy to see your new contribution in Polish (language) Wikipedia :-) Could you tell me how many of these settlements you have (would like) to do? I ask, because I know, that you are ablo to do even a few hundreds of them. If you'll do no more than ~50 articles a week, I'd take care of them. But if it would be more, it wouldn't be easy for me, because now I have a regular job (nearly 6 days a week) and some other absorbing personal things to do in whole week ;-) So, please tell me: how many geo-articles (Scotland & Wales) you'd like to write in a single week? Regards --Pit rock (dyskusja) 20:32, 4 maj 2021 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

@Pit rock I wasn't intending on producing a larger number of articles manually but rather a bot could create them, there are 665 in Scotland and 453 in Wales and most don't yet exist, which is far too many to do manually since I would probably only create 1 every few days but I can produce a sample one. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 15:18, 6 maj 2021 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
I think that it could be done, but one of our bot operators would have to volunteer to do actually all the job. In reality, I think that this won’t happen, because none of active bot operators – as far as I know – don’t have enough time to do so :-( I could ask, but I don’t expect miracles ;-) --Pit rock (dyskusja) 04:54, 9 maj 2021 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
@Pit rock I've added one, Tarbert though that has more content (ferries and peninsula) than what a bot would produce. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 15:37, 11 maj 2021 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
@Pit rock All links fixed. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 16:19, 31 maj 2021 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
@Pit rock I've added some from the 500+ population like Bowmore and some others that aren't listed like Port Charlotte and Arinagour. Something that could also done for Scotland (Szkocja) is to add the civil parishes (gminy) though they no longer have administrative roles they still exist. Like those in England those with the same name as another type of place can be included in that article such as Coll being a parish that includes the island and Portree being a parish that also includes Raasay but Killarow and Kilmeny only exists as a parish so could be created. Delta 51 are the following units translated like the places they are named after:

Is is correct to translate Cornwall (district) but not the others? Should Kornwalia (dystrykt) be moved to Cornwall (dystrykt) or is this an exception because like "v" "c" isn't normally used in Polish? Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 16:35, 20 lip 2022 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Hi there, per Pomoc:Nazewnictwo geograficzne#Szczegółowe zalecenia stosowania nazw, Polish translations are only used if they appear in this document (for the UK, see pages 354 onwards), published by the Commission for the Standardisation of Geographical Names (KSNG). Any geographical objects not listed ought to be under their original (English) names. Common nouns ("river", "isle" etc.) are customarily omitted (e.g. Trent, not "River Trent"). The main exceptions to this rule are: (1) grammatically the name makes no sense without the common term (e.g. en:Lake of the Ozarks; a good test for this is whether the common term can be omitted in English – one could say "people living on Sheppey" or "boats on the Trent", but would have to say "boats on the Lake of the Ozarks"), or (2) the common term is a misnomer, e.g. Isle of Portland, a peninsula, not an island.
With this in mind:
  • "Anglesey" both for the island and the admin area, per the KSNG document
  • Durham/County Durham - this is an interesting one. I would say "Durham" for the county ("County" omitted as a common term), and "County Durham" for the admin area (as a misnomer, since it's not a county)
  • "Kornwalia" both for the county and the admin area, per the KSNG document
  • "Londyn" for the city (per KSNG). I'm not sure "Londyn (region)" is a distinct entity from Londyn. However, assuming it is, it should arguably be under "London (region)" as it is not listed in the KSNG document,
  • Isle of May ought to be moved to May (wyspa) with "isle" dropped as a common term. Isle of Portland should be kept as is as a misnomer.
  • Oksford per KSNG, and City of Oxford as it is not listed in the document and a misnomer (district not a city).
Hope that helps. Delta 51 (dyskusja) 22:03, 20 lip 2022 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
Thanks Delta 51, that's what I generally though, most common nouns are dropped in Polish unless they are not actually what the noun is. On page 394 it lists "Wielki Manchester" being for Greater Manchester, should this be moved to the Polish name? But according to a source the Polish name was removed in 2009. Also note that it also suggests "Kumbria" is for "Cumbria" and "Cumberland" but Cumberland covered a smaller area than Cumbria, and will do so next year when a district is formed. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 17:17, 26 lip 2022 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
It appears the name "Wielki Manchester" was reinstated by KSNG in 2011 (minutes from one of their sessions), so, yes, the page should be moved, and all occurrences of "Greater Manchester" in other articles corrected by a bot. Regarding "Kumbria", I believe the Polish name only applies to the modern county of Cumbria (it has a separate entry under "Admin areas", also p. 355) and to the old Celtic kingdom of Cumbria (see [4], en:Cumbria#Name - it may be that this term is not widely used in modern British historiography, as I can't find many references to it on en.wiki). "Kumbria" certainly doesn't apply to the future Cumberland district, not least because the document was released in 2019, before its creation was even contemplated. I'm inclined to believe it doesn't apply to the historic county of Cumberland either, since, as far as I am aware, it was never referred to as "Cumbria" (and the entry lists these names as interchangable), while the coordinates they list fall within the bounaries of Westmoreland rather than Cumberland. Delta 51 (dyskusja) 22:45, 26 lip 2022 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
Delta 51 the English name "Cumbria" has indeed existed for a long time, far longer than 1974. Perhaps the name "Cumberland" even comes from "Cumbria"[5]. I can see you've moved the GM article and the bot request has started so I won't make any changes to avoid messing anything up. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 15:48, 30 lip 2022 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Infobox 5

@Delta 51, @Pit rock Is it possible to add a number 5 parameter to Szablon:Miejscowość infobox, the 1st is region, the 2nd is ceremonial county, the 3rd is unitary district and the 4th is other districts. Is it possible to add a number 5 for parish?

Secondly just out of interest what are the inclusion criteria for settlements? I'm now generally only creating those that I can find a population figure (even if old) or are in the Domesday Book and thus would likely be acceptable. From what I can see looking at Poland and some of the articles created by Kotbot there is generally no inclusion criteria and most settlements are considered notable. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 17:10, 6 lut 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]

Hi Buckden, yes, I expect it should be possible to add civil parishes to the infobox. I have submitted a request for them to be added. I have also proposed for the current implementation of admin levels to be split into separate ones for England/Wales/Scotland/NI, since currently the same units are being used for the whole of UK, and neither civil parishes nor some of the other units exist outside of England.
As far as I'm aware all named settlements are considered notable on the Polish Wikipedia. For countries for which there exists some sort of an official database of geographical names (such as TERYT for Poland or GNIS for the US), inclusion in that database is generally both required and sufficient for notability. As the UK government does not maintain such a database (that I know of), it is a bit less clear-cut, but I would imagine any settlement whose name appears on Ordnance Survey maps would qualify as notable. For settlements that no longer exist some other authoritative source, such as the Domesday Book or a historical gazetteer would likely be sufficient. Delta 51 (dyskusja) 22:47, 6 lut 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
@Delta 51 Thanks for submitting the request but for Scotland I think the correct unit is civil parish not community council area. While parishes in Scotland haven't functioned administratively since 1975 they unlike the community councils still appear on some maps click "parish" in boundaries on the right here. While Castlebay is a community council area the civil parish is still Barra[6]. Parishes still have census data while I don't think I've ever seen anything for the community council areas. We don't have many articles on the 871 parishes but we probably should, even EN surprisingly doesn't. I think the same is the case with Northern Ireland that could have parishes for level 5. I also agree with splitting the UK levels as while the UK is a single sovereign state like Australia etc the 4 countries are normally treated separately and have quite different administration. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 15:56, 8 lut 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
I believe you are right about Northern Ireland parishes, they can certainly be added. For Scotland, from what I've been able to find out, civil parishes were abolished as far back as 1930, though their boundaries continue to be used for statistical purposes. Community council areas are part of the local government, which is what the infobox for settlements focuses on. Their boundaries can be seen here: [7]. Delta 51 (dyskusja) 16:02, 12 lut 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
@Delta 51 OK, fair point, yes Scottish communities are part of the local government but I don't think they are normally regarded as administrative units just like in England joint parish councils. I would still have a slight preference for the parishes but if you think communities are more appropriate I'm fine with that. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 16:58, 16 lut 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
@Delta 51 Thankyou for the bot request to add the unitary districts to the infobox but if you look at Nassington[8] there are 2 things that have been missed, firstly the old district hasn't been removed from the infobox namely " |4. jednostka administracyjna = East Northamptonshire" should be removed. Secondly in the text it still states "w hrabstwie Northamptonshire, w dystrykcie East Northamptonshire" and should be updated to something like "w hrabstwie ceremonialnym Northamptonshire, w dystrykcie (unitary authority) North Northamptonshire". The fact it was in East Northamptonshire form 1974-2021 could be stated in the article though if needed. Thanks. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 14:06, 6 mar 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll look into that. Delta 51 (dyskusja) 14:35, 6 mar 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
@Delta 51 I've updated all the 2019-2021 changes of which the bot missed a few and the 2019 Suffolk and Somerset changes at Wikipedia:Zadania dla botów/Archiwum/stare/2019#Zmiany w dystryktach Anglii were missed for some reason. That's us all updated for the next few days. Next month the following changes will happen:
Thanks for making the changes! I'm planning to submit a request for a bot to apply the upcoming changes in the next few days. I'll make sure it does get done this time ;) The last task must have slipped through without anyone realising. Delta 51 (dyskusja) 21:44, 28 mar 2023 (CEST)[odpowiedz]
@Delta 51 Thanks, I assumed for whatever reason the request was rejected though I saw no obvious reason why. I otherwise assumed it would be taken care of later of which Dorset was but Somerset and Suffolk weren't. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 17:11, 30 mar 2023 (CEST)[odpowiedz]

Abolished district templates

@Delta 51, @Pit rock In late 2015 and early 2016 I created templates like Template:Berwick-upon-Tweed for abolished districts. Many of these include current and former parishes and settlements but a few of the more urban ones include wards which unless they give their name to settlements don't ever seem to exist here. EK item 8 seems to allow deletion of a page by its sole author if a reason is given. While we should obviously keep articles referring to former administrative units I don't think we tend to keep things like templates etc. I think we should look at deleting most. In a few cases like Corby (borough) the district existed at the time I created the article/template but was then abolished. There are 3 situations I can think of:

  • The district name is only used for a district like Template:Vale Royal and Template:Eden and should be deleted.
  • There is a large settlement of the same name like Template:Northampton or Template:Carlisle and there are enough settlements in the town/parish to keep the template in which it can be re scoped to be about the town, such templates had often been created with the district qualifier but I removed that shortly after as unnecessary.
  • There is a settlement of the same name like Template:Oswestry or Template:Corby but there aren't any or enough other settlements in the town/parish to keep the template so like the 1st example should just be deleted. Any thoughts on this, thanks. Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 12:15, 10 lis 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
Hi Buckden, we do have similar templates for former Polish administrative units (Kategoria:Szablony nawigacyjne - dawne polskie powiaty), so I'm not sure it's strictly necessary to delete them, though I don't feel strongly either way. If they are to be kept, I think their headers should make it clear they refer to abolished entities, e.g. "Miejscowości dystryktu Berwick-upon-Tweed (1974–2009)". If you were to request their deletion, I would suggest doing it via Wikipedia:Poczekalnia/kwestie techniczne, as I expect most admins would hesitate to "EK" them due to the number of pages affected. Also, those templates would need to be unlinked from all the pages where they are included, which would then be arranged as part of the deletion process. @Delta 51 OK I think I might just leave them then but I will look at making the changes you suggested. On De at least when it came to the navigation templates for districts like de:Vorlage:Navigationsleiste Districts in Northamptonshire but some weren't. Given some of the edits were patrolled and no one thought there was a problem with them suggests they may be fine but if deleted a bot could simply remove them from the articles. @Delta 51 Like this similar to Szablon:Powiat ełcki (dawny)? Buckden 5 (dyskusja) 12:11, 14 lis 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
Yes, looks good to me. The only nitpicky comment I have is that for year/number ranges you'd use an "en dash" (–) rather than the shorter hyphen (-). Delta 51 (dyskusja) 16:14, 15 lis 2023 (CET)[odpowiedz]
