Aquila – rodzaj ptaków z podrodziny jastrzębi (Accipitrinae) w rodzinie jastrzębiowatych (Accipitridae).
Zasięg występowania
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Eurazji, Ameryce Północnej, Afryce i Australii[16].
Morfologia
Długość ciała 50–104 cm, rozpiętość skrzydeł 103–176 cm; masa ciała samic 1153–7200 g, samców 938–4550 g[16].
Systematyka
Etymologia
- Aquila: łac. aquila „orzeł”, być może od aquilus „w ciemnym kolorze”; orzeł przedni był emblematem legionów rzymskich, na których sztandarach znajdowała się podobizna orła z podniesionymi skrzydłami[17].
- Aetos: gr. αετος aetos „orzeł”[17]. Gatunek typowy: Falco chrysaetos Linnaeus, 1758.
- Chrysaetus: gr. χρυσος khrusos „złoty”; αετος aetos „orzeł”[17]. Gatunek typowy: Chrysaetus aquilinus R.H. Sweeting, 1837 (= Falco chrysaetos Linnaeus, 1758).
- Pteroaetus: gr. πτερον pteron „skrzydło, pióro”; αετος aetos „orzeł”[17]. Gatunek typowy: Aquila verreauxii Lesson, 1831.
- Uroaetus: gr. ουρα oura „ogon” (tj. długoogonowy); αετος aetos „orzeł”[17]. Gatunek typowy: Vultur audax Latham, 1801.
- Tolmaetus: gr. τολμα tolma, τολμης tolmēs „odwaga, śmiałość”; αετος aetos „orzeł”[17]. Gatunek typowy: Falco bonelli Temminck, 1824 (= Aquila fasciata Vieillot, 1823).
